First things first — a huge congratulations on receiving your A-Level and BTEC results. Whether you smashed every grade you were aiming for or took a few unexpected turns along the way, today marks the start of an exciting new chapter in your life. All the hours of hard work, late-night revision marathons, and the occasional procrastination session (we see you scrolling TikTok) have brought you here. You should be proud of yourself.
For many, results day can feel like a whirlwind — a mix of celebration, relief, and “what do I do now?”. If you’ve confirmed your place at the University of Huddersfield, you’re about to embark on a journey that’s about so much more than just lectures and essays. It’s about making friends, trying new things, building independence, and discovering how to survive entirely on pasta and toast (although we do recommend vegetables now and again).
Who We Are – Your Students’ Union
The Huddersfield Students’ Union (SU) exists to make sure your university experience is the best it can possibly be. We’re run by students, for students, and everything we do is designed to help you feel supported, included, and inspired from your very first week right through to graduation day (when you’ll be expertly juggling your cap, gown, and camera smile).
We’re not just an office on campus — we’re a community. We’re here for advice, events, opportunities, and the occasional freebie that will make your student life easier. We’re also your voice on campus, making sure the University hears what students really need (yes, that includes more plug sockets in the library).
How the SU Can Help You
Starting university can feel exciting, but also a little overwhelming. The good news is, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Here’s what we can do for you:
- Events and Welcome Week – The perfect excuse to meet new people, try something you’ve never done before, and have fun before lectures start. Whether it’s a quiz night, society taster session, or a campus tour, there’s always something going on.
- Student Societies – From sports and gaming to music, culture, and campaigning, there’s a society for almost everything. If you can’t find one that matches your passion (whether that’s astrophysics or knitting tiny hats for cats), we’ll help you start your own.
- Support Services – Our Advice Centre offers free, confidential, and independent advice on housing, money, wellbeing, and academic issues. Basically, if you’ve got a problem, we’ll help you find a solution.
- Opportunities to Get Involved – Volunteer, represent your coursemates, or help run a campaign that makes a difference. You can build your skills, boost your CV, and make real change on campus.
Finding Somewhere to Live – HudLets
If you’re still searching for accommodation, HudLets is your best starting point. We’re the only accommodation provider on campus, and we’re run by the Students’ Union — which means we put students first.
Whether you’re coming through Clearing, moving from the other side of the country, or just haven’t had time to secure your room yet, we can help you find somewhere safe, comfortable, and affordable to live.
From shared flats where you’ll meet your new uni friends to private en-suite rooms perfect for peace and quiet, we have something for every budget. And yes, we’ll even explain what “all bills included” actually means.
Find out more and book your accommodation with HudLets here.
Your New Chapter Starts Here
University isn’t just about lectures and coursework — it’s about experiences, friendships, and figuring out who you want to be (and no, we don’t mean your Hogwarts house, although that’s important too).
From the moment you arrive, the SU will be here to help you navigate everything from your first society meeting to your first all-nighter in the library. So celebrate your success, get ready for Welcome Week, and prepare to make Huddersfield your new home.
We can’t wait to meet you.
