Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 runs from the 9th to the 22nd of September, marking a special milestone: 30 years since Fairtrade products first appeared on shelves. This year’s theme, Be The Change, encourages everyone to make a difference by choosing Fairtrade products in their daily lives. Every small decision to choose Fairtrade helps support ethical trade, fair wages, and sustainable practices, making a lasting impact on communities across the globe.

Fairtrade products in the SU shop

In the SU shop, you’ll find a variety of Fairtrade products, starting with our popular Fairtrade chocolate bars. When you purchase one of these, you’re not just indulging in a delicious treat—you’re supporting an initiative designed to create positive change for farmers and workers in developing countries. Fairtrade ensures that producers receive fair wages, improving their quality of life whilst also encouraging more sustainable farming practices.

But that’s not all. Coffee lovers, take note! The SU shop also serves Fairtrade coffee. Why not espresso your support for ethical trade by picking up a cup? Whether it’s your morning pick-me-up or an afternoon boost, your purchase goes beyond just a caffeine hit. Every cup you sip supports small-scale coffee farmers who rely on the Fairtrade system to ensure fair wages and better working conditions. It’s a latte good that comes from a simple decision to choose Fairtrade—for both people and the planet.

More ways to support fairtrade

Fairtrade isn’t just about chocolate and coffee. There’s a wide range of Fairtrade-certified products available, from tea and bananas to sugar and even clothing. The more you explore, the more you’ll discover opportunities to make ethical choices through your everyday purchases.

Fairtrade represents much more than just fair wages. It’s a global movement advocating for better business practices, environmental sustainability, and ethical working conditions. When you buy a Fairtrade product, you contribute to a system that empowers farmers and workers to earn a living wage, invest in their communities, and plan for a more sustainable future. In doing so, you support local economies, help families send their children to school, and contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.

Why your choices matter

With 30 years of Fairtrade behind us, the impact has been significant, but there’s still more work to be done. Fairtrade Fortnight is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to recognise the ongoing need for fair and equitable trade practices across the globe. Every small action, such as buying a Fairtrade product, adds up to create meaningful change.

When you choose Fairtrade, you’re actively deciding to support a fairer world. Whether it’s that morning coffee, an afternoon snack, or the clothes you wear, you have the power to create positive ripple effects by supporting ethical practices. And with more Fairtrade-certified products available, it’s easier to incorporate these choices into your everyday life.

So, during Fairtrade Fortnight and beyond, let’s all make an effort to Be The Change. Let your purchases reflect your values. By choosing Fairtrade, you’re contributing to a brighter, fairer future for producers in developing countries. Whether it’s in your SU shop or your local supermarket, Fairtrade products are there, waiting for you to make the ethical choice. Your small change can make a world of difference—so, raise that coffee cup, unwrap that chocolate bar, and know that you’re part of a global movement working towards a more just and sustainable world.
