When I applied to university, we were still in lockdown, so picking a university near home gave me a safety net. I wasn’t just looking for a degree; I was looking for security in a chaotic time. Early University experiences and culture shock

Before Huddersfield, I began my higher education journey at Glasgow University. I spent a year there but quickly realised I wasn’t quite ready for university life. The culture shock was intense, and I struggled to adjust. After that, I moved to Sheffield University, where I studied for two years. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy my time there either. It was during this period that I remembered my music teacher, one of my biggest inspirations, had moved to Huddersfield. I had initially applied to Huddersfield University through UCAS, but it hadn’t been my first choice.

In December 2014, I decided to visit Huddersfield, hoping it might be the fresh start I needed. I travelled alone from Sunderland by train, feeling completely overwhelmed when I arrived at the train station. Not knowing how to get to the university, I called a taxi. The driver was reluctant — the university was only two minutes away — but I convinced him to take me. Once I reached the Music Department, I was introduced to staff and given a tour of the facilities. Instantly, I thought, “This is great.” The facilities here were among the best I had seen, especially compared to other universities I’d visited. That first impression was the beginning of a meaningful chapter in my life.

From Undergraduate to Master’s

My time at Huddersfield spanned six years in total. I started with a four-year undergraduate degree in Music, which laid a solid foundation for my future. After completing my degree, I wasn’t ready to leave Huddersfield. I chose to continue with a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), adding an extra year to my studies. This experience not only deepened my academic knowledge but also introduced me to a new side of the university community.

Following the PGCE, I pursued a Master’s in Music Performance. Throughout these years, the support from lecturers and staff was invaluable. The School of Music and the School of Education both offered me guidance and encouragement that helped me thrive academically and personally.

What I learned along the way was that the clubs, teams and support networks around campus can completely change your experience and turn university from something overwhelming into somewhere you genuinely belong. Getting involved in sports and societies did not just give me friends and something fun to do outside my course. It gave me confidence, leadership skills, resilience and the ability to handle challenges I never expected.

Why societies and sports matter

It is easy to say that joining a team helps you socialise, and it does, but the impact goes much deeper. You gain an instant community of people to talk to, train with and rely on, which takes the pressure off trying to make friends from scratch. You also gain a real support network, because coaches, committee members, tutors and Students' Union staff become part of your circle. As someone with dyslexia, this mattered enormously. I always had people willing to listen, help me find adjustments and guide me through difficult moments. Committee roles taught me teamwork, budgeting, conflict resolution and negotiation, all of which are skills employers genuinely value. Sport and dance also gave me an essential break from coursework, a way to clear my head and reset when things got intense.

I chose Huddersfield because it offered exactly what I wanted: a sport and nutrition course that felt practical, interesting and focused on real careers.
