The Diversity Blog at Huddersfield Students’ Union is a space for stories, creativity, and reflection. It celebrates the rich, complex identities of students and staff who navigate the space between heritage and modern identity.
This platform exists to amplify voices, honour lived experiences, and create space for honest storytelling. It is a place where people can share who they are, in their own words, without pressure to fit into one definition or identity.
An evolving collection of blogs, poetry, spoken word, and artwork exploring the rich, complex identities of those navigating the space between heritage and modern identity.
The Diversity Blog message is to be proud of exactly where you lie on your invisible scale of identity.
The Diversity Blog was founded by Shivani Gug during her time as Education Officer at Leeds University Union. Since its launch, the project has shared poetry, prose, spoken word, and artwork from second- and third-generation students and staff across the UK.
Second- and third-generation individuals are often described as descendants of immigrants born in a new country, shaped by local culture while remaining rooted in ancestral heritage. Many people live within this in-between space every day, balancing cultural expectations, identity, belonging, and self-expression.
At Huddersfield Students’ Union, The Diversity Blog is supported by the Equity Officer, Dobby, alongside the BAME Network. Their involvement helps ensure this space is inclusive, supportive, and shaped by the voices of those it exists to represent.
The BAME Network plays an important role in advocating for racial equality and creating community for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students. Through this collaboration, The Diversity Blog becomes more than a platform — it becomes part of a wider commitment to representation, belonging, and equity.
We encourage Huddersfield students and staff to share their experiences, reflections, and creative work.
Contributors are also encouraged to explore other branches of The Diversity Blog around the world, connecting with a wider network of shared stories and experiences.
