Understanding Our Annual Report, Accounts and Affiliations

Huddersfield Students’ Union is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Each year, we produce externally audited accounts alongside a Trustees’ Annual Report. Together, these documents explain how we are run, what we have worked on throughout the year, and the impact of our activities and achievements. They also help make sense of the figures within our accounts.

Once completed, our Report and Accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission and Companies House, ensuring transparency and accountability in how we operate.

Why We Publish Information About Our Affiliations

Under the Education Act 1994, Students’ Unions are required to publish an annual report listing the external organisations they are affiliated with, along with details of any subscriptions, fees or donations made. This blog fulfils that requirement and outlines the organisations Huddersfield Students’ Union chooses to affiliate with in order to best represent and support our student members.

Our External Affiliations

National Union of Students (NUS and NUS Charity)

Affiliation fee: £26,324

The NUS is the national representative and campaigning body for students in the UK. Affiliation allows us to contribute to and benefit from national campaigns, research, policy development and representation on issues that affect students both locally and nationally.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS)

Affiliation fee: £5,282

BUCS is the national governing body for sport within UK higher education. Through BUCS, students from member institutions compete in league, cup and championship competitions across a wide range of sports.

Affiliation to BUCS, alongside other sport specific governing bodies, is a mandatory requirement for teams wishing to compete in BUCS fixtures. It ensures teams and individuals are appropriately insured, competition rules and standards are consistent, and students are legally protected while competing. Affiliation also provides access to advice, development opportunities and funding that support student sport.

Our Commitment to Transparency

We are committed to being open about how Huddersfield Students’ Union is run, how funds are spent, and the partnerships we maintain to represent students effectively. Our governance documents are published annually and are available to view at any time.
