Working at Huddersfield Students’ Union
What it’s really like working alongside your degree
Written by Jessica Lindley
Hey! I’m Jess, and I currently work at Huddersfield Students’ Union as a Retail and Events Assistant, alongside my role as a Marketing Assistant. I’m often asked by other students what it’s like working at the SU, so I thought I’d write this blog to answer some of the most common questions.
My Experience at the SU
My time working at Huddersfield Students’ Union has been nothing short of amazing. The opportunities I’ve had have allowed me to meet a diverse range of people and develop valuable skills such as teamwork, organisation, and communication.
I started working at the SU in September 2024 as a Retail Assistant, progressed to a Retail and Events Assistant in 2025, and most recently became a Marketing Assistant in January 2026. Being able to work across different roles really shows how the SU supports students to grow, try new things, and gain experience that benefits their future careers alongside their degree.
How to Get a Job at the SU
Huddersfield Students’ Union offers a variety of student job roles, which are usually advertised in the spring, with start dates at the beginning of the next academic year. All vacancies are posted on the Union’s website, which is exactly how I secured my first role.
While the SU isn’t currently recruiting student staff, here’s an overview of some of the roles available to give you an idea of what to expect when recruitment opens for the next academic year.
Admin Assistant
Admin Assistants provide vital support to societies and sports clubs by helping organise and coordinate events and activities. They also support student participation reporting and assist the wider SU team during key events throughout the year.
Retail Assistant
Retail Assistants work in the Students’ Union shop and help create a positive experience for customers. This includes helping students find products, keeping the shop clean and welcoming, ensuring shelves are fully stocked, and processing sales efficiently.
Events Assistant
Events Assistants support a wide range of events across the academic year, including Freshers’ Week and University Open Days. They act as friendly ambassadors for the SU and are often the first point of contact for students and visitors.
Responsibilities include selling tickets, preparing refreshments, collecting attendance data, and setting up and packing away equipment.
Liberation Network Assistant
Liberation Network Assistants are a key part of the SU’s voice and representation work. They connect with students across campus, support engagement events and campaigns, and help ensure student voices are heard.
Marketing Assistant
Marketing Assistants help promote the Students’ Union’s events and opportunities by creating engaging social media content and writing blogs that highlight the impact of the SU’s work.
Advice on Applying
Student jobs at the SU are competitive, mainly because they’re flexible and designed to fit around your studies. My biggest advice is to be confident, positive, and your authentic self.
Do your research on the different roles and take time to understand the Union’s values and mission, as these are often key things recruiters look for. Most importantly, embrace the opportunity to apply — you never know where it might take you.
