Description

The Huddersfield University Mountaineering Society (HUMS) participates in all styles of climbing, walking and mountaineering, the club ventures outside whenever possible. Plus with our location, the club is less than a couple of hours away from some of the best climbing in the country, with the Peak District, Yorkshire grit and limestone close at hand we are able to regularly get out on day trips.

The club is open to members of all abilities and is able to provide instruction on the basic safety techniques to all members who require it. Whilst the club is geared up for novices to join and learn the basic skills, we also have a number of skilled climbers in the club and are always looking for other climbers to come and push their boundaries. If you have been climbing before, or have never touched a rock in your life, then please come down and join us!

The membership fee includes 1 weekly bouldering session at Freeklime in Huddersfield on either Monday or Wednesday at 7pm, as well as at least 1 day out each month hiking in the local area at least. Members will also have the option to pay an additional £8 each month to get access to unlimited climbing at Freeklime with a Freeklime membership, normally worth £28. More details on Freeklime's memberships can be found here. We also make trips to climbing centres further afield, such as Big Depot in Leeds or the Climbing Hub in Bradford, as well as providing outdoor sport climbing days. Information about when we are meeting up can be found on our Instagram or our Lounge, so go ahead and join and we look forward to scaling some walls and walking with you soon!

We also host two weekend trips in November and April to popular walking destinations across the UK, with previous years going to the Lake District and Wales ,where members will be able to experience the mountains in full.

Our 2023 Lakes Kit list can be found here.

Activity Group Terms and Conditions.

When you enrolled at the University of Huddersfield you opted into our services, which allows you to obtain an Activity Group Membership. For us to provide you with the best experience we will process your data for carefully considered, specific and legitimate purposes which are in the interest of delivering our services and enhancing your experiences as a member of Huddersfield Students’ Union.

Activity Group memberships can be bought at any time throughout the academic year, with all annual memberships expiring at the end of the academic year (31st July). For Societies, the total membership cost will ensure your society membership until this date, and may cover for example the use of facilities, equipment, and trip and transport costs. However, this is subject to each Activity Group’s budget.

This money is paid directly into the Students’ Union and goes straight back into funding Activity Group activities.  To find out more please email the Activities Team – activities@hud.ac.uk

Every membership will have a 50p transaction fee implemented by our website provider. The 50p will be added on to every membership price and you will pay it when you buy your membership, (for example, a society membership may be £10 for the year, but will appear as £10.50 with the transaction fee added).

There is a 28 day cooling off period following the purchase of a membership. Full information about this and refunds can be found in the Student Activities Policy along with other policies, on the Union’s website here:  Governance @ Huddersfield Students' Union (huddersfieldsu.co.uk)
