The Huddersfield Engineering Society is taking bold steps in the upcoming academic year by entering the Formula Student Concept Class for 2025–2026. This move signals a renewed focus on innovation, skill development, and inclusive engineering education—offering more students the opportunity to engage in motorsport design at a foundational level.
The Concept Class—formerly known as Class 2—serves as an introductory competition tier within the prestigious Formula Student programme. Unlike the main class, which requires teams to design, build, and race a complete vehicle, the Concept Class focuses on the planning and design phase.
Teams are evaluated across key areas:
Engineering Design
Cost & Manufacturing
Business Presentation
This format allows student groups to refine their vehicle concept and build management strategies before taking on the resource-intensive challenge of physical car construction.
The shift toward the Concept Class aligns with the society’s aim to broaden participation and build a more inclusive engineering culture. By lowering the barrier to entry, students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines can now contribute to real-world engineering challenges without the logistical complexity of full car fabrication.
Key benefits include:
Early Engagement: First- and second-year students can meaningfully contribute to the design and business case.
Skill Expansion: Participants gain hands-on experience in project management, cost analysis, and presentation delivery.
Collaborative Development: Encourages cross-department collaboration with students from business, finance, and media backgrounds.
Watch out for our societies presentation at the welcome fair this year and during your courses induction week!
