FA Q's

Everything about applying to HSU – eligibility, process, and important details.

Do you accept speculative applications?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept speculative applications. If you would like to work for us, look at our current vacancies page and keep an eye on our social media spaces to find out when a new opportunity goes live.

Why can't University of Huddersfield students apply for core staff jobs?

The University regulations say that students should not work more than 16 hours per week. Most of our core roles are full time and while some roles are flexible, they are not suitable for working around studies.

We recruit student staff every year with applications opening around March, ready for jobs to start in August/September. Take a look at our current vacancies or keep an eye on our social media spaces to find out when a new opportunity goes live.

Can I apply for more than one job at a time?

Yes, just follow the instructions in each job pack and make sure that you let us know which job you are applying for when you send in your CV.

What information do I need to send you?

This varies from job to job. Make sure you read through the job pack carefully to find out exactly what you need to submit.

I am having technical problems / have a question — who to contact?

Please send all enquiries to su.jobs@hud.ac.uk

I missed a deadline. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, our shortlisting process begins as soon as the deadline has passed so we are not able to accept any late applications.

What is the latest time I can submit an application?

Our applications all close at 23:59 on the advertised closing date.

I am a student who is graduating soon. Can I apply for core staff jobs?

Yes, as long as you will no longer be a student when the job is due to start.

Do I need a work permit to work for HSU?

HSU cannot support VISAs for overseas workers. To work for us, you must be eligible to work in the UK. Your Right to Work documents, including any VISAs and Share Codes will be checked as part of the onboarding process.

Who will see my equal opportunities information?

This part of your application will only be visible to the HR team. Your equal opportunities information will be blinded as soon as you submit your application form. This means that all identifying information, like your name and address, will be removed. We store anonymous data and use it to help us continue to develop our recruitment process.

What happens after my application is submitted?

This depends on the role you have applied for, but the following basic steps apply.

  • When you submit your application, you will see a popup to say thank you – if you don’t see this, something might have gone wrong, so check by emailing su.jobs@hud.ac.uk.
  • Your application will be received and checked by the HR team. They will make sure you meet the eligibility requirements, check for reasonable adjustment requests, and blind your application (remove identifying information & equal opportunities info). (Note: student staff applications usually include a video, so they are not blinded, but equal opportunities info is removed.)
  • Next your application will be shortlisted. The hiring panel (Officer, manager, another manager) scores your application against criteria.
  • If you score enough points, you will be invited to an interview. You will be sent an interview pack containing all the information you might need, including tasks and questions. We don’t want to catch you out; we want to see you at your best!
