Best Places in Huddersfield

Written by HudSU Students for New and Returning Students

Discover the top food spots, cafes, study spaces, and socials to survive and thrive in Huddersfield.

Starting university (or coming back after a break) comes with a lot of expectations. You’ll be organised. You’ll cook regularly. You’ll find the perfect balance between studying, socialising, and resting. Realistically? You’ll need good food, decent coffee, reliable study spaces, and a few distractions to get you through. Luckily, Huddersfield delivers on all four.

Food Spots That Keep You Going

Gringos

Gringos is a cornerstone of student life. Open late and serving burritos that could double as a workout, it’s there for nights out, late study sessions, and evenings where cooking simply isn’t happening. It’s filling, affordable, and judgement-free — exactly what students need.

Apadana

Apadana is one of Huddersfield’s hidden gems and a firm favourite for special occasions or when you want to eat somewhere that feels a bit more grown-up. The food is consistently excellent, portions are generous, and it’s perfect for birthdays, family visits, or just treating yourself after a long week.

Northern Tea House

A Huddersfield classic and a student comfort zone. Northern Tea House is ideal for brunch, lunch, or long conversations that somehow turn into life planning. It’s affordable, welcoming, and always full of students taking a well-earned break.

The Parish

Great food, relaxed atmosphere, and ideal for groups. The Parish works for society socials, casual dinners, or those “just one drink” evenings that last much longer than planned. There are solid veggie and vegan options too, making it an easy crowd-pleaser.

Ephesus

If you’re eating with a group, Ephesus is a safe bet. Large tables, even larger portions, and a menu that suits everyone. It’s perfect for flat dinners, birthdays, or any situation involving multiple opinions and limited planning.

Cafes for Studying, Catch-Ups, and Everything in Between

Coffeevolution

Independent, cosy, and calm. Coffeevolution is great for catching up with friends or opening your laptop and feeling productive, even if progress is slow. The atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s a popular spot for students who want good coffee without the rush.

Kraft Coffee

Kraft is a student favourite for long study sessions. The coffee is strong, the staff are friendly, and it’s easy to settle in for a few hours. Ideal for working solo or meeting coursemates to tackle assignments together.

The Brew Haus

A quieter option that’s perfect when deadlines are approaching. The Brew Haus is calm, focused, and ideal for getting work done without too many distractions. Underrated, but deeply appreciated during busy weeks.

SU Shop Coffee (campus)

Predictable, reliable, and very student-friendly. Whether you’re revising, doing group work, or just need somewhere familiar,  is a solid option. Nobody will question you staying for hours — it’s part of the experience.

Study Spaces Beyond Your Bedroom

University Library

Silent floors for deep focus, group floors for collaborative work, and enough space to get you through exam season. If you need structure and minimal distractions, the library is the place.

Students’ Union Building

More social and relaxed, the SU is ideal for group work, society meetings, or studying with a bit of background buzz. Plus, you’re never far from coffee or food, which is always a bonus.

Heritage Quay

Peaceful and calm, Heritage Quay is perfect when you need a quieter environment away from campus. Studying here feels productive and purposeful — even if you’re mostly just catching up on reading.

Town Centre Cafes

Many cafes in Huddersfield are happy for students to work during quieter hours. Grab a drink, be respectful, and you’ve got yourself a change of scenery that can make all the difference.

Fun, Socials, and Switching Off

HudCrawl

One night, multiple venues, and a great way to meet people. Whether you’re new to the area or a returning student, HudCrawl is all about socialising, exploring town, and making memories.

The Students’ Union

From quiz nights and karaoke to society events, workshops, and campaigns, there’s always something happening at the SU. It’s one of the easiest ways to get involved, meet new people, and feel part of the community.

Greenhead Park

Perfect for fresh air, walks, picnics, or clearing your head between lectures. Greenhead Park is a great reminder that taking a break is just as important as staying productive.

Cinema, Bowling, and Low-Pressure Fun

Sometimes the best thing you can do is switch off. Watching a film, going bowling, or spending time with friends without an agenda is essential for balance — and highly encouraged.
