Broaden My Bookshelf

At Huddersfield Students' Union, we’re passionate about making the university a more inclusive space for all students. That’s why we’re encouraging you to get involved in Broaden My Bookshelf, an initiative designed to increase the range of books in the University Library written by marginalised people, such as those from Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds and/or those who identify as LGBT+.

What is Broaden my Bookshelf?

Broaden My Bookshelf aims to enrich the library’s collection with books authored by people from underrepresented and marginalised groups. This initiative is your chance to suggest titles that reflect diverse experiences and perspectives, helping to ensure that the library better represents our student body. By contributing to this project, you can help amplify voices that are often overlooked.

Why does this matter?

The stories we read and the academic resources we use play a huge role in shaping our worldview. Historically, many voices have been underrepresented in these spaces, particularly those of marginalised communities. Broaden My Bookshelf gives you the opportunity to suggest books that reflect the rich variety of human experiences, making the library a more inclusive place where all students can find themselves in the literature they encounter.

How does it work?

It’s simple. If you know of a book written by an author from a marginalised community that you think should be in the library, you can recommend it. This includes fiction, non-fiction, academic texts, or even memoirs and biographies that tell important stories from BAME communities or LGBTQ+ individuals. Your suggestions can help diversify the collection and make the library a space that speaks to everyone.

To suggest a book, head to the Broaden My Bookshelf page and use the form to submit your recommendation. Once you’ve entered all the required information, you’ll be able to submit your suggestion for consideration.

Why Huddersfield Students' Union is supporting this

At Huddersfield Students' Union, we believe in the importance of representation and inclusion in all aspects of student life. By supporting Broaden My Bookshelf, we’re encouraging students to play an active role in shaping the resources available at the University Library. It’s a powerful way to contribute to a more diverse, welcoming, and educational environment.

How you can get involved

  • Submit your suggestions: Have a book in mind that reflects a marginalised voice? You can submit your recommendation through this form.
  • Spread the word: Get your friends and peers involved. The more books suggested, the more diverse the library collection will become.
  • Join the conversation: Follow both Huddersfield Students' Union and the University Library on social media for discussions, book recommendations, and updates on events linked to Broaden My Bookshelf. Stay informed about the impact this initiative is having and how you can get involved further.

By participating in Broaden My Bookshelf, you’re helping to create a library that reflects the full range of student experiences and identities. Don’t miss the chance to leave your mark on the university’s reading list.
