How to be More Sustainable as a Student

Green Week starts today! Join HudSustainability for activities and events throughout the week.

Small changes make the biggest difference. You do not have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to be more sustainable. The easiest and most lasting habits are the ones that fit naturally into your daily student routine.

Carry a Reusable Bottle or Cup

Try carrying a water bottle or reusable cup. You can refill throughout the day without buying single use bottles or takeaway cups, thanks to refill stations across campus. It quickly becomes second nature, takes little effort, and saves money over time.

Turn Off Lights and Unplug Devices

Turning off lights and unplugging chargers, game consoles, and other electronics when they are not in use can have a big impact. In shared housing, setting up a quick lights off routine before bed or lectures reduces energy use and cuts costs for everyone.

Shop Second Hand

Buying second hand is affordable and extends the life of clothes and household items. Keep an eye out for Vintage Folk pop ups on campus, and browse charity shops for clothing, books, and essentials. I personally love the YMC charity shop in the town centre — I once got a cushion and a pair of trousers for just four quid! So next time you are out, do not forget to check the charity shops.

Reduce Food Waste

Plan two or three meals per week, use leftovers creatively, and share bulk items with housemates to make food last longer. A communal pantry for basics like rice, pasta, and spices can save time and money. Cooking with a friend now and then makes it fun and social, and you will cherish the evenings spent cooking together while watching your favourite show.

Try Plant Based Meals

Occasionally choosing vegetarian or vegan meals reduces your environmental impact. You do not need to go fully plant based overnight. Even swapping one meal a few times a week makes a difference over a semester. For short trips around campus, walking, cycling, or using public transport is usually faster, cheaper, and better for your health. If you are new to cycling, consider joining a local cycling group or borrowing a campus bike to build confidence.

Make Sustainability Social

Weekly cooking with friends, clothing swaps, or shopping second hand together makes sustainable choices enjoyable rather than extra work. Join volunteering, student societies, and SU sustainability events like repair cafes, community gardening, pop up swaps, and awareness stalls. You will meet like minded people, gain useful skills, and make a positive impact on campus. Volunteering also looks great on your CV!

Start Small and Build Habits

Start with one or two habits, keep them up for a month, and then add more. Focus on small, regular choices, like one meatless meal a week, a refillable bottle, and switching lights off when leaving your room. Sustainable living as a student should be doable, social, and consistent with your everyday priorities. You will be surprised by how much impact these small steps can make over time.
