How to Get Involved on Campus

Without Looking Like You Are Trying Too Hard

Friends, fun, and making uni life actually feel like uni life

So, you have arrived at uni. You have got a fresh set of pens, a folder that you are never going to open, and a vague sense of panic that your future best friends are already in the library. Do not worry. Getting involved on campus is easier than it looks, and it definitely does not require you to suddenly become a morning person. Here is how to make friends, have fun, and pretend you always knew what you were doing.

Societies

Societies are basically the university version of find your people. Whether you are into anime, baking, debating, or pretending you can play the guitar, there is a society for you. The best part is that you do not need to be good at anything to join. You can turn up, say I am here for the vibes, and instantly be accepted.

Try heading to a taster session or the society fair. It is like speed dating, but with more flyers and fewer awkward silences. And if you cannot find a society that suits you, start your own. Yes, you. You can be the president of a society called People Who Like Naps and honestly it would probably be a hit.

Sports Clubs

Sports clubs are great if you want to stay active or just need an excuse to wear sporty clothes without feeling judged. There are clubs for all levels, from I once ran to the bus to I am training for the Olympics. The important thing is to turn up.

Even if you are terrible, you will still make friends, usually because people love a good disaster story. If you are feeling brave, try something new. Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent for badminton, volleyball, or table tennis. And if you do not, at least you will have a funny story to tell.

SU Networks

If you want to get involved but do not want to commit to something every week, SU Networks are perfect. They bring students together who share similar experiences, without the pressure of being in a society or sports club. Think of them as relaxed spaces where you can meet new people, talk about things that matter to you, and feel supported.

Huddersfield Students Union has six SU Networks: the Disabled Students Network, the Global Citizens Network, the LGBT plus Network, the Women Students Network, the Class and Social Mobility Network, and the BAME Network. You can get involved as much or as little as you like.

The Big Idea Forum

Got a brilliant idea that could make student life better? The Big Idea Forum is where those ideas go to be heard. Whether you want to improve a service, change something on campus, or start something new, this is your chance to speak up.

Students submit their ideas and the most popular ones can turn into real changes. It is perfect for anyone who likes to think big or simply says there must be a better way.

Academic Rep

Being an Academic Rep might sound serious, but it is actually one of the most impactful ways to get involved. Academic Reps represent students on their course, raise feedback to staff, and help improve teaching and learning.

If you are the person who always notices when something could be better, this role is for you. It also looks great on your CV and gives you real experience of making change happen.
