The UK Government recently proposed to reduce the Post-Study Work (PSW) visa from two years to 18 months. We find this very concerning. International students bring new ideas, global ideologies, and cultural diversity that enrich our campuses, towns and cities. Many want to stay and give back to the country that they have studied in, and the current two-year visa gives them the time to do that. The PSW visa gives international students a fair chance to stay in the UK after graduation, find work, and put their education into practice. Cutting this time short makes it harder for graduates to build their careers, settle into life here, and contribute meaningfully to the economy and communities they’ve already spent years being part of.
Inclusivity is the heart of what we do at Huddersfield Students’ Union therefore we strongly believe this is the wrong direction for students, for universities, and for the country. We are having regular meetings with the university and are asking them to actively lobby these concerns wherever they can. We are also reaching out to the local MP so that this can be raised in the parliament. The NUS has started a petition as well, and we encourage all the students to sign. We’re calling on the government to keep the PSW visa at two years and to listen to the voices of students who know how important that time is.
