Farewell to Wamick – A Year in Reflection

By Huddersfield Students’ Union | July 2025

As another academic year comes to a close, we’re reflecting on everything your SU Officer Team has done to represent, support and empower students across campus. At Huddersfield Students’ Union, we believe in student leadership that’s bold, authentic, and driven by lived experience — and this year’s Officer Team has embodied that in every way.

From leading campaigns and shaping university policy, to hosting events and standing up for student rights, your four Officers — Wamick, Bethany, Irfan and Freya — have made a real difference to student life.

Farewell to Wamick

This summer, we say goodbye to Wamick, who is completing his time as a Sabbatical Officer after two impactful years of service.

Wamick first joined the team in 2023 as Equity Officer, where he quickly became a visible and passionate advocate for underrepresented communities. From building safer and more inclusive spaces, to coordinating meaningful celebrations like Black History Month, he placed students’ lived experiences at the heart of everything he did.

In 2024, Wamick was elected as SU President, where he led the Officer team through a year of bold priorities and big conversations — always keeping students at the centre. Whether speaking up in meetings with university leadership or welcoming new students at events, Wamick’s presence was marked by compassion, conviction and care.

We want to say a heartfelt thank you to Wamick for his dedication, his vision, and the countless hours spent working behind the scenes to improve the student experience. His legacy will be felt for years to come.

Your Returning Officer Team

We’re pleased to share that the rest of your Officer team will be continuing into a second year — giving them the opportunity to build on this year’s work and launch new ideas with fresh energy.

Bethany will return as Activities Officer, focusing on creating spaces where students can connect, belong and thrive. Whether it’s societies, Give It A Go events or sports, Bethany has been a tireless advocate for student involvement — and next year promises even more exciting opportunities to take part.

Irfan will continue as Education Officer, championing your academic rights and making sure the student voice is heard at every level of university decision-making. From feedback and assessments to digital access and learning support, Irfan is committed to making education more equitable and empowering for all.

Freya, who has served as Equity Officer this year, will be stepping into the role of SU President. Freya has led on key inclusion projects, built strong relationships across student communities, and worked to ensure every student feels seen and supported. We’re confident she’ll bring thoughtfulness and energy to the role of President as she leads the Officer team into 2025.

We’re also excited to welcome Dobby to the team in July for 2025–2026 as the new Equity Officer. With a deep commitment to equity and student voice, we know Dobby will continue the vital work of building an SU where all students feel represented.

What’s Next?

The Officer Team is already planning for September — including an exciting Welcome Week, refreshed campaigns, and more opportunities for you to get involved, share feedback, and shape your university experience.

Being an SU Officer is about more than just holding a title. It’s about showing up for students every single day — and this team has done just that. Whether you’ve attended an event, submitted a piece of feedback, voted in an election, or simply had a chat with one of the team in Student Central — you’ve been part of what makes the SU stronger.

We’re proud of everything that’s been achieved this year, and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings.

To Wamick — thank you for your impact this year.

To Freya, Bethany, Irfan and Dobby — let’s do this.
