What is BUCS?

Everything you need to know about university sport, Team Hud and how you can get involved.

You might have seen BUCS Wednesday mentioned on social media, spotted teams getting ready for fixtures or noticed students heading off to represent Team Hud. But what exactly is BUCS?

BUCS stands for British Universities & Colleges Sport and is the organisation that runs university sport competitions across the UK. It gives students the opportunity to compete against other universities, represent their institution and take part in competitive sport alongside their studies.

For students at the University of Huddersfield, BUCS is a big part of university sport, with Team Hud competing in fixtures throughout the academic year.

Whether you’re competing, supporting your friends or trying a new sport, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

What does BUCS stand for?

BUCS stands for British Universities & Colleges Sport.

It brings together universities and colleges from across the UK to compete in organised sporting competitions. There are BUCS leagues, championships and events covering a huge range of sports and levels of competition.

From team sports such as football, hockey, rugby, netball and basketball to individual sports including tennis and badminton, there are plenty of opportunities for students to compete.

What is BUCS Wednesday?

If you’re wondering why so many BUCS fixtures take place on a Wednesday, it’s because Wednesday afternoons are traditionally used for university sport.

This means you’ll often see students heading off campus or getting ready for home fixtures while other students come along to support them.

BUCS Wednesday

At Huddersfield, BUCS Wednesday is when Team Hud gets to represent the University of Huddersfield against teams from universities across the country.

Fixtures can take place both at home and away, so our teams might be competing on campus one week before travelling to another university the next.

What is Team Hud?

Team Hud is our student sports community, made up of students who represent the University of Huddersfield across a range of sports.

Our teams train, compete and travel throughout the academic year, balancing their sporting commitments alongside university life.

For many students, being part of a Team Hud club is about more than the competition itself. It’s a chance to meet new people, make friends, stay active and become part of a community.

Whether you’ve been competing for years or you’re completely new to your sport, university sport can be a great way to get involved.

Why is BUCS important?

BUCS gives students the opportunity to experience competitive university sport while studying for their degree.

For those competing, it can be a chance to challenge themselves, develop their skills and compete against students from other universities.

It’s also about representing your university. When Team Hud steps onto the pitch, court or playing field, they’re not just representing their club. They’re representing the University of Huddersfield.

There’s also a strong community around BUCS. Teammates train together, travel together and support each other throughout the season. And when home fixtures are taking place, having students on the sidelines can make a huge difference.

It’s more than a fixture.
It’s a chance to represent Huddersfield, compete and be part of Team Hud.

Want to get involved in a sport?

You don’t have to be an experienced athlete to get involved in university sport.

Whether you’ve played a sport for years or fancy trying something completely new, there are plenty of ways to get involved at Huddersfield.

Joining a sports club is a great way to meet people, stay active and try something different alongside your studies. You’ll also have the chance to represent Team Hud, compete in BUCS fixtures and be part of a team.

New to a sport?

Don’t worry if you haven’t played before. Many university sports clubs welcome beginners and students of different abilities.

Get in touch with a club, head along to a training session and see if it’s for you.

What if competitive sport isn't for me?

That’s completely fine. You don’t have to compete in BUCS to get involved in sport.

There are opportunities to take part in recreational and social sport too, whether you want to play casually, keep active or simply meet new people.

And if you’re not interested in playing at all, you can still be part of Team Hud by supporting your friends at fixtures and getting involved on matchdays.

There are lots of ways to get involved

  • Join a sports club
  • Try a sport you’ve never played before

You don’t have to be competing to get involved

One of the best things about BUCS is that you don’t have to be an athlete to be part of it.

If your friends are playing, head along and support them. Bring your course mates, housemates or flatmates and make an afternoon of it.

Supporting a home fixture is also a great way to discover sports you might not usually watch. You might know football, but have you ever been to a university hockey or futsal match?

Keep an eye on Team Hud's social media for fixture information, results and matchday content throughout the year.

What happens during a BUCS season?

BUCS runs throughout the academic year, so there’s plenty of action to look forward to.

Teams compete in regular fixtures as part of their leagues, with results contributing towards their season. Depending on the sport and competition, teams can also have the opportunity to progress through knockout competitions and compete for BUCS titles.

That means every fixture matters, whether it’s a home game in Huddersfield or an away trip somewhere else in the country.

For our athletes, it can mean early starts, training sessions, travelling to away fixtures and plenty of preparation behind the scenes.

BUCS is about more than the result

Of course, everyone wants to win. But university sport is about more than what’s on the scoreboard.

It’s about the people you meet, the experiences you have and the memories you make along the way.

For some students, university sport might be their first experience of representing a university. For others, it could be the continuation of a sport they’ve played for years.

Either way, BUCS gives students the opportunity to compete, challenge themselves and be part of something bigger while studying at university.
