Big Idea Progress Update: Bike Hire Initiative
We're excited to share progress on one of your Big Ideas – the Bike Hire Scheme.
What’s Happening?
In addition to gaining strong student support, SU staff have discussed the idea in detail and a clear plan is now in motion. Importantly, this initiative will be student-led through the newly created Sustainability Society.
Who’s Involved?
The Sustainability Society met with the Head of Student Experience on 9th July to explore how they can become operational on campus. As part of their launch, the society is considering two key student-led projects for the new academic year:
-
A Bike Hire Scheme
-
A Litter-Picking Initiative
Both of these ideas were submitted through the Big Ideas platform and are being actively taken forward.
What’s Next?
The Students’ Union will help the Sustainability Society connect with EPIKS – a Kirklees-based environmental project that runs local initiatives, including community bike hire schemes. While this project will take time to implement, it’s a key goal the SU and the society are committed to working on together.
Want to Get Involved?
The next committee meeting of the Sustainability Society takes place on 23rd July. If you're passionate about sustainability and want to play a part in shaping these initiatives, we’d love to hear from you.

As a suggestion aligned with sustainability, student lifestyles, and reducing carbon footprints, I would like to propose providing bicycles for rent to students living near Huddersfield. These bikes could be used for commuting to the university.
The priority for renting the bikes could be based on factors such as students’ addresses, their access to public transportation, and the number of days they attend university.
This system would work similarly to the laptop rental system currently offered by the library.
Comments
On the face of it a great idea, however there are local charities who are already willing and able to assist with this. They already have the infrastructure in place.
