Disability History Month takes place every year in the UK from 14 November to 14 December. It is a time to recognise, honour and uplift the voices and experiences of disabled people. It invites us to reflect on progress, acknowledge ongoing barriers and celebrate the strength and creativity of disabled communities.
Disabled Network – Celebrating Disability History Month
The Disabled Students’ Network at Huddersfield Students’ Union exists to create a space where disabled students feel understood, connected and valued. Disability does not look the same for everyone. You may identify as disabled, have a long-term health condition, be neurodivergent or experience mental distress. You are welcome here. You do not need to prove anything or explain yourself.
Throughout Disability History Month, we are sharing stories, hosting conversations and highlighting the history of disability rights. It is important to remember that the rights disabled people have today were fought for. Activists, students, carers, communities and allies have pushed for change — and that work continues.
Our aim is to challenge misconceptions, reduce isolation and build a campus where accessibility is not an afterthought but a foundation. We want a University where disabled students can take up space, speak, lead and shape change.
How to Get Involved
Joining the Disabled Students’ Network is simple and open to anyone who feels this is the right space for them. You do not need to disclose anything formally to take part — just come as you are.
If you would like to join, meet others or share your experiences, we would love to welcome you. You can also get involved in campaigns, events and social spaces with the Students’ Union.
You deserve support. You deserve representation. You deserve community.
