A women’s workout space inspired by student voices

Every year, students across campus use the Big Ideas platform to share suggestions, spark new conversations and shape positive change at Huddersfield Students’ Union. Some ideas are quick wins. Others take time, teamwork and persistence. And every so often, a single suggestion becomes something that transforms the whole campus community. This is one of those moments.
In October 2024 a student shared a thoughtful idea that quickly gained attention. They suggested introducing dedicated women only time in the campus gym to create a more comfortable environment and encourage participation from women who may feel unsure or hesitant in a mixed space.
They highlighted how this could help women from different backgrounds feel more confident and able to take part in fitness on campus.
The idea opened the door to a wider discussion. Students began sharing thoughts, concerns and suggestions. One student explained that strict time slots might make things difficult for people who already struggle to fit the gym around work, lectures and other commitments. They suggested something more flexible that would give women freedom to choose when to work out.
Another student, speaking as a Muslim woman, shared how meaningful a dedicated space would be for her. The conversation moved from “what if” to “what next”.
Your Students’ Union Activities Officer and the ActiveHud team began exploring what a real solution could look like. They spoke to students, gathered honest feedback and explored different options. They wanted the final outcome to match what students had asked for and reflect the concerns raised in the comments.
What began as a suggestion for time slots evolved into something even better. The team committed to creating a permanent, flexible and welcoming area designed especially for women — a space built around comfort, confidence and safety.
On 21 November 2025 that idea became real.
The Mezz officially opened on Floor 3 of Student Central. It is a brand new women only workout space inside ActiveHud, created directly in response to the voices of students.
It is more than a room with equipment. It is a promise delivered. It is a clear example of what happens when students speak up and the Students’ Union listens.
From functional equipment to quieter corners for building confidence, The Mezz was shaped by the people who needed it most. The very first Big Idea post started a journey that ended with a real space on campus.
On the Big Ideas page the support was clear. Thirty students liked the idea and only two disliked it. Even the comments with concerns helped shape a stronger and more thoughtful final outcome.
Today The Mezz stands as a space for women of every background. It is a place where confidence can grow and where students can feel comfortable and welcome. For a closer look, your Activities Officer has shared a tour on Instagram.
The Mezz exists because one student chose to share a thought and others joined the conversation. That is the power of the Big Ideas platform. If there is something you would love to see improved, changed or introduced on campus, you can submit your own Big Idea today. Every idea matters. Every voice can create change.
